Marisa Marcês

Head of People & Culture at Timeular

The Interview

  • Tell us about what you do and where your team is located
At Timeular, we want to unlock your time. We believe there's more to life than working long hours, so we focus on working smarter, not harder. By figuring out how your time is spent, you get to tweak it, and ultimately you get to live a more healthy and rewarding work-life.

Although based in Austria, our team spreads throughout 14 countries, from Canada to Russia and from the UK to South Africa.
  • What's a modern benefit you offer your team that isn't mainstream yet?
50 days PTO! We learned that time off is the best source for great ideas. You get to rest, participate in events or hobbies you're interested in, to do whatever you need to recharge. But also, if you feel 50 days is too much, you can get 40 days and a 5% salary increase. Your choice, really!

Also, when working, there's no "immediate reply" culture. As long as work is happening, you can do it from the sofa, the beach, your grandma's house, out for a walk, whatever works for you. We have a few meetings (and meeting-free Thursdays), which also helps. The premise is that we are all responsible adults, so we know what needs to get done. Imagine that!
  • Tell us about your approach to meetings vs async communication?
We do meeting-free Thursdays, as I mentioned, and try to keep meetings to a minimum (and optional). We use them to either socialize or update everyone simultaneously (like Demos or All Hands). Other than 1:1s, we might have three or four regularly scheduled monthly meetings. Most of our communication happens async, through Slack and/or Looms (or Trivia games). We also have a bi-weekly random get together (Watercooler meetings) and on-site retreats three times a year.
  • What's your favorite tool for remote collaboration?
If we can only choose one, then Slack. We can organize, decide, ask for feedback, share personal and work info and integrate with other apps.
  • Can you give us one prediction for the future of work?
Flexibility. Work can happen where you are instead of life happening where you work. You can work around your personal life, bringing in tremendous quality of life. Choosing where and when you work will be (is) life-changing. Some people prefer working early mornings; others prefer to sleep in late. People with children and pets have their shared schedule, and if your work doesn't have to be done at a particular time - just because it's "always been like that" - then you can work on your time and terms. And this doesn't mean everyone gets to work remotely, as not everyone likes it: but you get to choose.
